WELCOME TO NORTHWESTERN'S FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT

Thank you for taking the time to take a look at our program! Our staff is knowledgeable, dedicated, and kind. They look forward to seeing your child each day and enjoy helping them with their breakfast and lunch selections. The food service department employees are just one group of excellent staff at Northwestern that contribute to a child’s education. Northwestern participates and follows the National School Lunch and Breakfast program. Each of our meals comply with the Meal Pattern Guidelines established by the USDA.

Breakfast At School

Mornings can be really crazy! The alarm doesn’t go off, the kids don’t want to get up, there’s no time to eat breakfast before the bus comes or they’re just not ready to eat. Or maybe your teenager grabs a can of soda and a candy bar on the way to school. If this sounds like your house, we have good news for you.

Breakfast is available at school! Take advantage of this option to ensure your child eats a nutritious breakfast. Recent studies show a link between nutrition and learning. A nutritious breakfast helps students be more alert so they can actively participate in class. Breakfast has vitamins and nutrients for a strong and healthy body.

Breakfast at school is affordable, too. A full breakfast costs less than convenience store items. If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you also qualify for the breakfast program, with no additional paperwork.

So take advantage of this opportunity to start the day on the right foot. Your child will find breakfast at school provides not only a nutritious meal but also a relaxed atmosphere for socializing with friends and siblings.

Wellness Policy (Search Policy 8510)

ALLERGY INFORMATION

To ensure that no student has an allergic reaction, it is imperative that allergy information is indicated in the Medical Information section of the student registration form completed at the start of each school year. The school nurse collects this information. The Food Service Department works with each school’s nursing staff to collect these allergy details. This information is input into our computer and students are flagged in the system so that no student goes through the meal lines with a food item that can negatively impact their allergy.

The following food allergens may be used as ingredients: Milk, Egg, Fish, Crustacean Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Soy, and Sesame.

PaySchools

PaySchools is offered to assist in depositing money into your student’s meal account. To access the PaySchools link, click on the Parent Resources tab found on our district web page. The PaySchools tab is listed under “important links”. If any assistance is needed, you can direct your questions to PaySchools at 877-393-6628 or psc_help@payschools.com. Support center hours are 8:30am-7:30pm ET Monday-Friday. You will need your student’s ID#. First time users can obtain your student’s ID# either by asking your student (used in the cafeteria line daily) or by calling the school building office. We encourage you to activate the Low Balance Notification on your PaySchools site to assist you in keeping funds available for your student(s). Charging at breakfast and during the last two weeks of school is not permitted.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Procedure For the Collection and Payment for Charged Meals

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide meals for their children while at school. However, it is important to ensure that children receive the nutrition they need to stay focused during the school day.

Parents/guardians are asked to complete a Free/Reduced meal application each year before school starts to ensure that meal charges do not begin to accrue. Applications may also be filled out at any time during the school year.

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to pay off any outstanding balances. Payments can be made through the district's website using Payschools, check, or cash. Any unpaid charges may be attached to the student as an obligation that will need to be paid by the parent/guardian prior to the official separation with the district due to transfer or graduation.

Low balances letters will be sent out regularly to inform families of outstanding balances. If balances are not paid off accordingly, the Food Service Director, Principal, or Superintendent will place a call to the Parent/Guardian requesting payment.

Snacks and ala carte items cannot be charged or purchased if funds are not available.
